SpongilusTM is a sterile water-insoluble, non-elastic, porous and pliable gelatin sponge prepared from highly purified collagen-derived gelatin, intended for application to bleeding surfaces as a haemostat. It is able to absorb and hold many times its weight of blood and other fluids within its matrix, and is particularly used when control of capillary, venous and small arterial bleeding by pressure, ligature, and other conventional procedures is either ineffective or impractical.
